TAR00 Transition and Retention of students: Some of the factors affecting student life at school. Course rating:

Course Description
Presenter: Brian Marshall

Two of the biggest problems students and schools face are transition from one phase of learning to the next and retaining students until the end of year 12. Within Australia around 200,000 young people leave school without the foundation skills they require in order to make a smooth transition to adult life. If we agree that twelve years of worthwhile learning is the benchmark then we need to do all we can to ensure that smooth transition. This seminar will discuss the various stages of transition, the factors influencing early school leaving and steps that could be undertaken to increase retention and decrease the transition problem. It will also include a look at what has been called 'generation Y' or, as it is sometimes referred to the 'Me gen', and their inherent needs.

RatingComment
It was very well structured and although much of it I already knew it was nice to have the time to be reminded. Brian is very reasonable and the 'human' element was also good.
Good ideas and discussion of statistics and research.
Excellent presentation, relevant information that provided practical approaches to transition and retention.
I learned that this is a very complex issue however, through Brian's informative approach and willingness to answer our questions that there is much that can be done in the school setting.
Good, informative and relevant, useful links to other resources.
