Presenter: Richard Andrew

This workshop is a detailed examination of a quality teaching approach within Level 5 Mathematics. The basis to teaching mathematics conceptually lies in creating a learning environment which enables students to become engaged, work mathematically and make the mathematical connections necessary for conceptual understanding to occur. Open-ended questioning, assessment for learning and teaching with an inquiry approach are key strategies which will be demonstrated through the dimensions Number (fractions, decimals, percentage, rates, ratio) and Space. During the Space section the free dynamic software 'GeoGebra' will be used to bring this topic 'alive'. Participants will receive numerous GeoGebra files ready for immediate implementation in the classroom.

What to bring:

Paper, pen, flash drive, calculator (not essential)

Lots of useful resources provided. Would like have explored Geogebra in more detail at the year 7 and 8 level.
Very good hands on approach to a difficult area in teaching- also affirming. Great ideas.
Lots of new resources and creative ways to conceptually teach math given.
Fantastic course and presenter. Met its advertised aims, and would highly recommend to others.
Loved the idea of getting students to need the question by getting them straight into work and let them ask the questions as they go 'brick wall' idea.
Very helpful, thought provoking. It challenged me to think about my classroom methods and useful resources.
Good balance between listening and actually doing things. Really like the hands on resources given. It made me reflect on my teaching and how I can improve.
Got some great ideas/resources from both the presenter and other teachers. Richard's presentation was excellent, an experienced maths teacher giving advice on what works and what doesn't.
