C2A00 A Different Approach - Space (years 7 and 8) Course rating:

Course Description
Presenter: Paul Dann

This course offers a different approach to the introduction and the teaching of mathematics and it will focus on the dimension Space at years 7 and 8. The ideas, methods and lessons to be demonstrated are centred around equipment gathered from Op-Shops and Garage sales. The teaching aids used will help involve and engage students in mathematics lessons. For example, old wooden venetian blinds are used to teach the properties of angles. In the time available (one day session) I will endeavour to demonstrate 8 - 10 lessons but I will also mention many other lessons that I have taught. Participants will find themselves inventing new ways to introduce facts from within the Space dimension. Sharing our ideas will provide inspiration to each and every one of us.

Very practical and useful activities to give in maths. Refreshing to see how simple ideas and a little effort can make maths for you.
Lots of useful, practical advice and activities ready to slot into our crowded curriculum with minimum preparation. Clear and understanding presentation by an experienced teacher.
It is refreshing to know that there are maths teachers that recognize that there are better ways to teach than through a text book.
Good ideas and realistic way to approach them.
Really good, the whole day was engaging from start to finish.
Very practical ideas for angles etc. Great idea for generating random numbers (magnets, poker chips etc.)

I would like to thank participants for their positive feedback and to their contributions based on their own experience. I hope that you attempt some different strategies to introducing or teaching mathematics in the near future.
