Presenter: Douglas Butler

Teaching statistics offers rich opportunities to bring real data into the classroom. This course is designed to help those teachers who have not had too much experience at teaching statistics, and would like to find out how dynamic software and Excel can help to make sense of some of the trickier concepts. This hands-on workshop, conducted using a walk-about graphics pad, will start with a review of the data sources on the TSM Resources site, and how to extract data into Excel using the "Text to columns" feature. Some data sets are best treated in Excel (eg Pie charts, Bar Charts), others benefit greatly from the more dynamic approach in Autograph (eg the scatter plot , dot plot, stem plot and histogram). More advanced work from the Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics courses will include the Binomial and normal distributions, both from a theoretical point of view and as means to test real data. All delegates will be presented with a complimentary copy of Autograph 3.3

What to bring:

All delegates will be expected to bring their own laptop and mouse. They will have received a download link in advance to install Autograph (in case they need their IT department to do this for them). It will be a help, but not essential, to have had some time to familiarise with the operation of both Autograph and Excel before this course. All the data and other summary notes will be available online for this course. Delegates will be expected to have familiarised themselves with all the probability and statistics references in the new curriculum.

An excellent demo of Autograph and the session before lunch was good. After lunch I was very disappointed, there was too much content and the assumption was that all math teachers are full bottle on stats and probability distributions, which is definitely not that case. Some haven't studied it at the tertiary level so I didn't really gain too many insights into the content of the national curriculum because it went way over my head.
Many great ideas, very stimulating.
A great intro to Autograph.
Good pace. Lots of interesting stuff. Loved the math analysis of images.
Learned a great deal about Autograph but will need to practice a lot.
Incredible information overload, the pace was too much for a novice like myself.
Douglas was very knowledgeable and easy to listen to.
Very informative, great presenter and very helpful.
Lots of great information. Was a little fast in some places, some demonstration did not apply to our curriculum.
Good introduction to the autograph program. Sometimes went too fast, however it was mentioned that all lessons can be accessed on the internet. Very important!
Eventually, information overload but earlier work was very good. I will spend time later.
Great presentation and use of resources.
