Presenter:
Anita Chin A conceptual understanding of whole numbers in the early years provides a foundation for algebraic thinking and working mathematically with fractions and decimals in the middle years. However, many students use inefficient strategies or rote learnt procedures for computation and lack the prerequisite skills for learning number concepts in later years. With the Australian Curriculum encouraging a depth of understanding and an interconnectedness of mathematical concepts, this hands-on workshop will examine teaching and learning sequences for connecting number concepts and algebraic thinking in a mixed ability classroom. Participants will engage with key models and activities using a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to develop students' ability to communicate using conceptual and mathematical language in both verbal and written forms. Strategies for increasing student engagement and practical ideas for implementing concrete materials will be modelled. Black line masters provided.

Concrete practical examples to use.
Great ways of adopting simple but effective activities for struggling students using basic operations.
Lots of trucks and strategies that I didn't know of. Definitely will use for my classes and my children.
Presenter was great and engaging activities that can help fill the gaps and can be certainly incorporated in class. Not too time consuming. Very much worth it. Very engaging.
