The course will look at the impact of popular media on adolescent girls self esteem, identity, body image and friendship groups. Topics will include advertising, body image, sexualisation and the role of appearance magazines such as Dolly. Issues linked to friendship groups, cliques and popularity will be addressed with reference to positive influences (preventative approaches) and negative influences (relational aggression, cyberbullying, body image). The physical, social and emotional effects will be identified. Teachers will be equipped with strategies to apply in the classroom. These will be discussed and demonstrated throughout the presentation. The strategies will develop skills in resilience, self esteem and problem solving. They aim to encourage and empower adolescent girls to understand and resist negative media messages. The content is linked to PDHPE Stage 4/5 strands 1 and 3.The course will be useful to all teachers in a welfare role as well as PDHPE.
