TBI01 The Blues, Improvisation and Jazz Harmony: The theory behind the reality

Course Description
Presenter: Ray Forster

The National Association for Music Education states that, "the blues is one of America's greatest musical treasures. A roots music form that evolved out of African-American work songs, field hollers, spirituals, and country string ballads more than a century ago, the blues is the foundation of virtually every major American music form born in the 20th century, including jazz, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and hip-hop". This study suggests a coherent method/curriculum of teaching the basic principles of improvisation and harmony using 'chord/scale theory'. The classes are interactive with participants encouraged to bring an instruments or small keyboard but not mandatory. The classes are designed to be the 'hands-on' practical experience of actually playing the theory. This course is for all stages of experience and starts at a basic level. Comprehensive class notes are provided, plus music, CD & lesson plan.
