Completing A Toolkit for Teaching Stage 6 PDHPE for the First Time will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and assessment of NSW Curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework addressing standard descriptors 3.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

General Description

This course provides teachers with a toolkit to commence teaching Stage 6 PDHPE content. Participants will unpack the requirements for effectively commencing teaching HSC content and begin their personal planning process.

 Audience

Beginning or inexperienced Stage 6 PDHPE Secondary teachers.

COVID-19 Event Information

All TTA venues continue to work with advice provided by the NSW Health Department in managing the risks associated with the current COVID-19 situation. While the current risk is low, TTA venues will be taking steps to help provide a safe environment for our courses. There will be increased cleaning and disinfecting of all areas, and venues will be providing ample hand sanitiser pumps. While venues will be taking all the care that they can, we also stress the need for course participants to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around them. If you are not feeling well or showing symptoms of COVID-19, please don’t attend this event. Wash your hands regularly. Avoid shaking hands where possible. Practice cough etiquette, coughing into a tissue or your elbow and washing your hands afterwards. Thank you for your understanding.

Sessions

HSC PDHPE: the basics to get you started for teaching the course

1 hour and 30 minutes

-Introduction and overview of the day

- Stage 6 PDHPE structure is examined with suggested scope and sequences for teaching of units of work being modelled.

-Content for Core 1 and Core 2 modules are explored with a focus on highlighting material that transfers from Preliminary content, allows choice in content or is picked up in an option module.

-Some innovative T/L strategies are modelled for teaching this content as well as resources that can be used.

Delivery will be presentation style, allowing ample opportunities for questions and discussion.


HSC PDHPE Options and HSC assessment requirements

1 hour and 30 minutes

- What options are available to teach?

- How to select what to teach?

-What are the HSC course assessment requirements?

- What makes a good HSC assessment task? Samples of tasks are reviewed to determine this.

Delivery will be a mixture of presentation style, discussion and small group work.


HSC PDHPE: routines to enhance student results

30 minutes

A sample of tried practices and routines will be presented that have enhanced student engagement and knowledge with content leading to prepared and successful HSC examination performance.


Preparing for teaching your students

1 hour and 30 minutes

Participants will be given the opportunity to design T/L strategies or resources for Stage 6 PDHPE content in small groups. These will be presented to the group and collated so they can be taken back to use in the classroom.

Presenter

Danielle Simpson

Danielle is the Professional Learning Consultant for Health and Physical Education (HPE) and is part of the quality assurance team at Teacher Training Australia (TTA). Her experience in the Health and Physical Education sector is broad. It encompasses teaching, consultancy, presenting lectures/workshops through to administration of a professional association. Danielle has been teaching Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) in NSW for the past 25 years and has been Head of Department for 11 of those years. She is currently teaching PDHPE part time. Danielle is an experienced educational consultant who has worked with schools in areas such as mentoring PDHPE faculties, program and assessment writing, curriculum content and delivery for inexperienced teachers of Stage 6 PDHPE and HSC marking simulation. Danielle has co authored the textbook for Senior PDHPE “Application and Inquiry HSC Course” (second edition) and is an experienced senior HSC marker. She is also part of the writing team for Preliminary PDHPE and HSC Trial examinations for various professional bodies. Danielle presents student workshops with HSC In the Holidays for HSC PDHPE revision. She is the Vice President of the PDHPE Teachers Association.
