Course Description

This course will enhance your confidence in teaching Stage 6 PDHPE.

You will examine how to effectively construct an assessment task, associated marking criteria and provide meaningful feedback to your students.

Methods to ensure students are prepared for HSC style examination questions as well as exploring what makes a Band 6 response will also be examined so you can take these on board in your own teaching.

Participants will be able to share ideas and make connections in a collegial environment.

Completing Enhancing Student Literacy Practices in Stage 6 PDHPE Assessment will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Education Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and Assessment of NSW Curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework, addressing standard descriptors 5.1.2 and 5.2.2 from the Australia Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

 

Sessions

Stage 6 Assessment

1 hour and 30 minutes

  • Introduction of course presenter and participants
  • What can be used as an assessment task in Stage 6? Recap of new assessment requirements
  • Sample assessment tasks are modelled to illustrate best practice
  • How do you construct a quality assessment task and relevant marking criteria?

Delivery will be presentation style and small group work allowing ample opportunities for questions and discussion.

Delivering meaningful student feedback and what constitutes a Band 6 response?

1 hour and 30 minutes

  • What does meaningful feedback look/sound like?
  • When and why should this be delivered?
  • Various student responses are examined to illustrate strategies that assist students in attaining a Band 6 response.

Delivery will be a mixture of presentation style, discussion and small group work.


Preparing for your own teaching-application of criteria and feedback

2 hours

Participants will be given the opportunity to partake in a mini simulation marking experience so they can come to terms with marking criteria’s for Stage 6 assessment in PDHPE in small groups. This will enhance participant confidence in associated marking criteria’s interpretation/application and giving meaningful feedback to enhance student performance.

All TTA venues continue to work with advice provided by the NSW Health Department in managing the risks associated with the current COVID-19 situation. While the current risk is low, TTA venues will be taking steps to help provide a safe environment for our courses. While venues will be taking all the care that they can, we also stress the need for course participants to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around them. Presenter

Danielle Simpson

Danielle is the Professional Learning Consultant for Health and Physical Education (HPE) and is part of the quality assurance team at Teacher Training Australia (TTA). Her experience in the Health and Physical Education sector is broad. It encompasses teaching, consultancy, presenting lectures/workshops through to administration of a professional association. Danielle has been teaching Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) in NSW for the past 25 years and has been Head of Department for 11 of those years. She is currently teaching PDHPE part time. Danielle is an experienced educational consultant who has worked with schools in areas such as mentoring PDHPE faculties, program and assessment writing, curriculum content and delivery for inexperienced teachers of Stage 6 PDHPE and HSC marking simulation. Danielle has co authored the textbook for Senior PDHPE “Application and Inquiry HSC Course” (second edition) and is an experienced senior HSC marker. She is also part of the writing team for Preliminary PDHPE and HSC Trial examinations for various professional bodies. Danielle presents student workshops with HSC In the Holidays for HSC PDHPE revision. She is the Vice President of the PDHPE Teachers Association.
