Course Description
One in four children will start their first year of formal schooling with a speech and/or language disorder. Early intervention can make a big difference in the outcomes of children with a speech and/or language delay. However, teachers and early educators are often unsure about speech and language milestones and what to do when a child is struggling with communication development.
Created by qualified speech pathologists, in collaboration with early educators, this PD uses real-life examples to teach early educators, learning support officers, and early Stage 1 teachers how to identify, evaluate and refer children with a potential communication delay.
The course comprises four modules:
-
Speech and Language Milestones:
This module covers everything you need to know about speech and language milestones for ages 2-5 years. The course covers identifying speech development, language development, lisps and phonological speech sound disorders.
-
Speech and Language Screener for Early Educators:
This module has been created to empower early educators, learning support officers and teachers to screen children to investigate if they have a speech or language delay.
-
Parents and the Referral Process:
This module examines the research on having effective and positive conversations with parents to take that next step if a communication delay has been identified. It includes funding options and referral pathways for allied health in Australia.
-
Allied Health - What do they do?:
This is a bonus module for educators that may not have had experience with allied health providers and are unsure as to how they may help their students.
